Losing a Loved One

The most difficult part of pet ownership is losing your beloved pet. Nothing could be worse for a cat owner than having to say goodbye as your little companion leaves your side at the end of his or her life. Some kitties live long lives and others are with us for only a short time. But every kitty, no matter how long we know them, leaves an indelible mark on our heart.

For all our friends and fans who have lost a kitty along the way, we would like to share this poem.

To all the kitties we've loved before.

To all the kitties we’ve loved before.

Gone Girl is based on a best-selling novel by Gillian Flynn. She wrote the screenplay, too, so unusually for movies based on novels, you don’t come away from this one saying, “The book was better.” Unless you’re a real stickler for booksarealwaysbetterism, in which case, don’t even bother watching movies, you nerd!

Baker — My human watched Gone Girl on an airplane, while I was crammed in my small carrier under the seat in front of her. I was fine, by the way. Don’t worry about me.

Lance — Me too.

For meowvie buffs, Baker and Lance have produced their own version of this film, Gone Cat. You can watch it here:

Spot the Kitty Takes a Walk on the Wild Side

Spot the Kitty fans Penny and Kelly Borrowman of Calgary, Alberta, Canada did some wild kitty spotting in early September.

The Borrowmans have not decided whether to call their visitor Bobcat Stanfield or Bobcat Marley. Which do you think is the better name for this sweet wild kitty?

Here’s a close up of Bobcat Stanfield relaxing in the lovely back garden.

Don’t you just want to go out and cuddle this guy? Bobcats are not dangerous, but they’re not cuddly pets, either. This area of the city is very close to a provincial park where deer, ospreys, and other wild animals live. The Borrowmans did the right thing by just taking pictures and otherwise leaving their guest alone to enjoy their garden. Hopefully he had such a nice visit that he’ll be back again shortly!

Cat Tales: The Story of Two Kitties in Mexico

Spot the Kitty recently relocated from Beijing, China to Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos, Mexico. Baker and Lance always love exploring a new place, and they’re willing to endure hours spent in their carriers aboard airplanes if it means they’re on their way to an exciting new destination.

We settled in to our new HQ fairly uneventfully. There are many differences between our Mexican abode and previous homes. For one, we are now in a house where previously we were always several floors up an apartment building. When one looks out a window here, there is a whole world to explore right on the other side.

Lancy has become thoroughly obsessed with the great outdoors.

Yesterday Spot the Kitty’s human servants went into Guadalajara, Mexico’s second biggest city, for the first time. We spent a couple of hours on busses each way and a few hours exploring. We got back at about dinner time and the first thing we did was greet Baker at the door. Lance was nowhere to be found, however. After searching the casa, we discovered that someone small, furry, and adventuresome had lifted one of the window screens.

We ran outside and started in opposite directions around the block, calling, “Lance! Lance! Come home!” Fortunately our little conquistador turned up in the patch of jungle right across from our gate.

We assumed that this adventure past large dogs, zooming cars, and prickly underbrush would have quenched his thirst for exploration, but Lance, usually a heavy sleeper, spent the night mewing to go out again. Well, all screens have been secured and the only way he is going out now is in his harness!

Meanwhile, after a restless night, I woke up to the sound of crazy kitty play time. Unusual, since both usually run around maniacally after breakfast, not before. I went to investigate and found Baker proudly displaying a large brown scorpion! It looked like it had been dead under the mat for a long time, and nobody was stung, but Baker batted it around a bit longer just to be sure.

Baker heroically caught a dead scorpion, which he displays for his fans.

Viva la Mexico!

Baker and Lance review Unfinished Business

Unfinished Business is a meandering look at the funny side of big business. Vince Vaughn plays Dan Trunkman, a small business owner who discovers that he has a lot of people relying on him. Find out all about it on IMDb.

Lance: This movie was great. There was just enough space on the sofa for me to curl up between my humans and it gave me a solid 91 minutes of evening nap time, with scritches. Two paws up!

Baker: My human laughed loudly throughout the movie, but it didn’t disturb my rest. Two paws up!

Spot the Kitty is On the Move: Today’s Kitty Spotted in Moscow, Russia!

Not a lot of kitties to spot in Moscow. It has been rainy for most of our visit, which might explain why the kitties are hiding. Or maybe Moskovites just prefer to keep their kitties indoors.

However, walking past a field on our way to our hostel, we did see one intrepid little cat stalking some prey in the grass. Can you spot her?

Kitten Growth Chart — Six-Week-Old Kittens

A six-week-old kitten can do everything a cat does, but is still a baby. At this age the kittens are very playful. They play with their toys, with their mum, with each other, and with us non-stop, it seems! When they’re totally pooped, they sleep for a couple of hours then wake up and start again!

Playing with Mum at six weeks old -- Libby finally stops mothering them long enough to play with them a bit.

At six weeks, a baby cat should be weaning off its mother’s milk and eating solid food regularly. A lot of people think it’s a good idea to rehome kittens at this age, but actually kittens should stay with their mum until they’re eight to nine weeks old. Their mum still has so much to teach them, about cleaning themselves, behaving properly (in cat terms), and love. Sometimes kittens who are removed from their family at a young age grow up with behaviour problems, such as pooping outside the box or playing too roughly.

Ben is so tired from all that playing he falls asleep anywhere!

If you have a baby kitten of this age that you received from a friend, you should ask if your kitten can stay with his mum for a couple more weeks at least. If that’s not possible, you’ll have to be very attentive to make sure your kitten is eating, drinking, and pooping properly, and you’ll have to be very patient to take on the job of the mother and teach the kitten some of the finer arts of catting.
